KSC Beautiful Lengths started last spring when Allie found out that her close friends’ mother was going through chemo again. She had battled breast cancer when they were children, but it had been gone for years.
Allie had donated at Londonderry High School three years before and decided she would start growing her hair out to donate again, in honor of her friend’s mother. But then it occurred to her – what if instead of just her donation, she could get a bunch of people to donate.
Allie told her friend, KSC Senior Brittany, about the idea to create an event like the one at Londonderry. They started a social media campaign in the spring to let people know that they would be doing it so that they could begin growing out their hair. They worked with people from KSC’s community service and student involvement offices to book a space and talk about preliminary planning. They were excited to announce at the start of the semester that the donation event will happen on campus in the gym on April 13, 2013.
On November 28, they held their first informational and pledging event, where they showed the video Pantene created highlighting LHS’ event and took the first pledges. Roughly 40 people showed up to the meeting, and 10 people signed up on the spot. In less than a week, they’re now up to 23 pledges, and they keep coming in!
